<p class="wp-block-paragraph">April Fools&#8217; Day is the perfect time to have a little fun with your students and add a bit of surprise to their learning. This year, why not introduce an April Fools&#8217; joke that will engage their senses and make them believe they’re experiencing something truly unique? I’m talking about a “scratch and sniff” worksheet&#8230; well, sort of!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this fun and lighthearted activity, your students will read about three fascinating scents and “scratch and sniff” their way through the adventure. The twist? They’re not actually smelling anything (except maybe a little paper!), but the experience will be so realistic that they’ll be convinced otherwise.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s how you can pull off this April Fools&#8217; joke in your classroom:</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Step-by-Step Guide to Pulling Off the Perfect April Fools&#8217; Joke</strong></h2>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Introduce the Activity with Excitement</strong><br>Start by building some excitement around the activity. Tell your students that they’re about to explore some very unique and fascinating scents that will take them on a sensory adventure. Explain that they’ll be doing something special today: a “scratch and sniff” challenge, with special worksheets that have scratch and sniff spots. You can demonstrate scratching and sniffing one of spots. Pretend like you&#8217;re smelling something really unique!<br><br></li>



<li><strong>Engage Their Imaginations</strong><br>The key to making this activity believable is to get your students to <em>imagine</em> they&#8217;re actually smelling the scents. As they scratch and sniff the paper, encourage them to close their eyes and think of the scents described in the text. If they begin to say they can&#8217;t smell anything, tell them to re-read the scent description and try again!<br><br></li>



<li><strong>Share the Scent Stories</strong><br>Students will read through the text about the three different scents. Your students will be intrigued by the thought of smelling things like petrichor (the smell of rain), saffron (a rare and expensive spice), and ginkgo fruit (an ancient and unique autumn scent). Make sure to encourage them to take their time and really <em>experience</em> these smells.<br><br></li>



<li><strong>Keep the Fun Going with Questions</strong><br>After they’ve scratched and “sniffed,” have them answer the follow-up questions. The fun part comes when they start to think about what they just experienced! You can ask them about which scent they liked the best.<br><br></li>



<li><strong>The Big Reveal!</strong><br>After everyone has had time to reflect on the scents, don&#8217;t forget to say, &#8220;April Fools!&#8221;</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-5co1u">Every year on Groundhog Day (and most other fun holidays), I see many resources floating around for early years and younger grade students &#8211; and I think that&#8217;s so great! But, I also don&#8217;t want our middle-grade and intermediate-grade students to be left out of the fun. Whenever I can, <strong>I always like to make fun freebies for older students. </strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-qile"><strong>What is Groundhog Day?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-ch8ch"><strong>Groundhog Day happens every year on February 2nd.</strong> It is based on a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that suggests that a groundhog seeing its shadow can predict the weather.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-2d3aj"></p>


<div class="hbg-highlight hbg-highlight-blue"><span>If a groundhog comes out of its den and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will go back into its den, and winter will last six more weeks.</span></div>


<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-4860k"></p>


<div class="hbg-highlight hbg-highlight-green"><span>If a groundhog comes out of its den and does not see its shadow due to cloudy weather, it will be an early spring.</span></div>


<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-2vgr3">Many regions have their own groundhog <strong>prognosticators</strong> (a prognosticator is someone who can predict the future). For example, in Ontario, there is &#8220;Wiarton Willie,&#8221; in Québec there is &#8220;Fred la marmotte,&#8221; in Pennsylvania there is the famous &#8220;Punxsutawney Phil&#8221; and in Ohio there is &#8220;Buckeye Chuck.&#8221;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-p7h9"><strong>Awesome&#8230; I&#8217;m in! What&#8217;s the freebie?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-dvbbq">I made a fun freebie in which students will learn about Groundhog Day. They will look at the predictions for either early spring or long winter made by different groundhogs around Canada and the United States (Wiarton Willie, Fred la marmotte, Punxsutawney Phil and Buckeye Chuck) for the past decade. Then, they will<strong> calculate the probability of what the groundhogs may predict for this year! </strong>This activity would be great as a minds-on at the beginning of the day on Groundhog Day or during your Math block.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-4b9af">Media is advancing at a rapid rate. Students have access to social media, the internet, and in more recent developments, AI technology. The rapidly changing media landscape has placed increasing importance on teaching students about media literacy and explaining how to evaluate, interpret, write and design media. Today&#8217;s blog will outline the recent changes in the modern media landscape, as well as unique tips that teachers can incorporate in their classrooms to make their students media literate digital citizens.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-1phm"><strong>Media Landscape in Recent Years:</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-21fo2">In the past, media literacy education primarily focused on traditional media such as printed books, magazines, newspapers, and television. Though these topics are still incredibly important, teachers are now responsible for learning modern media forms and relaying their information to their students. With the rising use of social media, such as TikTok, as well as AI ChatGPT technology, students must learn to question the sources of their information and the motives behind their creation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-cfspe">I remember vividly teaching high school fitness classes and seeing just how quickly TikTok emerged. I figured it would be a short-lived trend, but found out in a matter of weeks that it rapidly changed the social media landscape and it would be here to stay.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-a94ed">Oh, the struggle to stop the in-class TikTok dances!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-91r71"><strong>Unique Tips for Teachers:</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-cg82i">There are several unique tips that teachers can incorporate into their classrooms to help their students become media-literate digital citizens. Here are a few:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-baq6m">1. <strong>Start Early</strong>: Introduce media literacy to students as early as possible. Fortunately, media literacy education in Ontario begins in Grade 1, but – let&#8217;s be real—most children are already heavily engaged in media consumption before Grade 1. Because students are already exposed to media, it&#8217;s important to teach them how to navigate it from a young age.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-c2ilc">2. <strong>Analyze Advertisements</strong>: Use advertisements as a tool to teach media literacy. Analyze the messages that advertisements convey and the tactics they use to persuade viewers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-32e1d">3. <strong>Encourage Critical Thinking</strong>: Encourage students to ask questions and think critically about the media they are consuming. Teach them to consider the source of the information and to question whether the information is reliable. Case studies are a great way to present scenarios with questionable sources of information or bias.</p>

Digital citizenship is the ability to navigate digital environments such as social media safely. A good digital citizen is responsible and considerate and can respectfully engage in these spaces. Developing strong digital citizens requires teaching online safety, privacy, and responsible online behaviour. Again, case studies are a great way to do this!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-ds0al">Teaching the importance of Remembrance Day goes beyond just acknowledging historical events; it instils values like empathy, gratitude, and the understanding of the profound impact of war on individuals and societies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-1utve">The Importance of Teaching About Remembrance Day</h2>

<li><strong>Fostering Empathy: </strong>Teaching students about Remembrance Day helps them develop empathy and understanding for those who have served in the military and the sacrifices they&#8217;ve made. <p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-76suk">Bell work refers to an activity or task that students do at the beginning of class to focus their minds and prepare for learning. Thought-provoking, creative bell work is a great way to begin a literacy block and establish writing as a daily practice.</p>

These are a great way to spark student interest and engagement. This resource includes 100 writing prompts themed for each day of the week, giving your students the structure and routine they need to thrive in the classroom. If you are teaching intermediate-level students, the resource includes 200 prompts!</p>

Ask yourself, “What goal do I want to accomplish this month?” or “What skill do I want students to develop by the end of the month?” For example, you may want to emphasize procedural writing in one month, then shift the focus to media literacy in another.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-eaufo">The skills and learning expectations can be determined by reading the curriculum strands and expectations.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-7apr5"><strong>Some ideas for structuring long-range plans:</strong></h3>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-9k12"><strong>1. Determine your “evergreen” materials.</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-vmtj">“Evergreen” resources are tools and activities that can span the full year. We choose to include a variety of materials such as morning writing prompts, shared readings, spelling lists, and reading logs.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-587be"><strong>2. Use the month of September to focus on building classroom routines.</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-bjkru">You may want to use this time to introduce “evergreen” resources or language materials that will be used year-round. This will depend on your teaching style and preferences.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-6ttg3"><strong>3. Incorporate seasonal events into your planning.</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-fjgri">Students love when their learning is integrated with real-world events, holidays, and celebrations. For example, you may choose to cover your narrative writing unit in January so that students can write a creative story about a New Year celebration. You may also wish to include seasonal or holiday words into your spelling lists. Your choices will depend on your class demographic and personal preferences.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-c85g3"><strong>4. Focus on assessment.</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-eo0j2">Create your long-range plans with the end goal in mind. Identify where assessment opportunities arise in each month and which strand(s) you will be assessing (reading, writing, media, oral communication). It is best to write these opportunities directly on your plan, so you are reminded of them throughout the year.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-3jcst"><strong>5. Be flexible.</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-1nbsk">You may decide to add or omit activities that may divert you slightly from your original plan made at the beginning of the school year. As the year progresses, you will learn about your students’ interests and their ability levels. You may learn new strategies or activities that will be more suitable for your students.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-3evkv">Why are Spelling Lists Important?</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-188ov">With the abundance of spellcheck and autocorrect features in modern technology, it is easy for students to overlook the importance and value of being a great speller. Many students are fully reliant on this technology which hinders skill development as well as the memorization of common everyday words. Autocorrect and spellcheck aren&#8217;t foolproof and there are occasional errors with these programs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-6tuv5">Teaching students to be effective spellers builds self-confidence. An excellent spelling program should not only teach students to spell but also introduce new vocabulary words. This creates better writers who can utilize the English language to the best of their abilities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-93s97">As teachers, we understand the importance of spelling proficiency in fostering effective communication skills among our students. A well-structured spelling list program can not only enhance students&#8217; spelling abilities but also make the learning process enjoyable and engaging. In this blog post, we will explore various approaches to building spelling list programs and suggest exciting themes that can captivate students&#8217; interest and motivation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-b9sv3">1. Integrate Other Subject Areas</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-3smtq">Spelling programs can be easily incorporated with other subject areas to teach or reinforce vocabulary. Science, geography, and history vocabulary words are perfect for spelling lists. Students can define important keywords, which can enhance their understanding of units covered in class, as well as their spelling skills.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-2vh8o">2. Recognize Spelling Patterns</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-5eidh">Another effective strategy for teaching students to spell is to focus on word families and rhyming patterns. Rhyming-themed lists or word families like -at, -an, -in can help develop phonological awareness while reinforcing spelling skills.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="viewer-cusip">3. Use Various Teaching Strategies</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-it1t">A classic approach to spelling lists is to have students write their spelling lists multiple times and study the words for memorization. While this can be effective, there are many other approaches that can be effective too. Manipulatives, flashcards, technology-based games, and interactive activities are all effective alternatives that can be used instead of or in addition to other spelling programs. It can also accommodate various learning styles.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-a3gif">Teachers can also consider inviting students into the word selection process. This helps to establish a personal connection with the words. If words are too easy or difficult, teachers can project a thesaurus and allow students to choose more suitable words that have the same meaning.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-93e5v">To create meaningful connections between spelling and real-life situations, consider basing your spelling lists on everyday vocabulary. Themes like &#8220;Around the House,&#8221; &#8220;Community Helpers,&#8221; or &#8220;Seasonal Changes&#8221; can provide students with relevant and practical words to master.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="viewer-61au5">For teachers who do not want to create their own programs, Teacher Resource Cabin offers complete full-year spelling programs for each Grade 1-8. Each grade has 40 spelling lists total- which is more than you would need for a typical school year!
