In this project, students learn that symmetry means both sides of an artwork are the same, like a mirror image. They also explore space in art, which are the positive areas (the main shapes) and the negative areas (the background around them).

Once students have completed the good copy of their love letter, they will add a creative and personal touch to their final product! On a separate blank piece of paper, students will draw a detailed illustration of their chosen inanimate object (i.e. the “object of their affection”!) This drawing will serve as a decorative page topper for their love letter. These love letters can be put together to create a great bulletin board for Valentine’s Day!

All scenarios and settings in this activity are related to winter, not any one particular holiday. Santa Claus is included as a winter character, but the card can be left out.

An older-grade class could create this poster to hang in the hallways near younger-grade classrooms to wish them a Happy Halloween! Or, students can make this poster for their own classroom’s Halloween celebrations.

There are 35 pieces that make up one 100 cm x 135 cm poster, so there should be enough for each student in your class to do at least one! If you have extras, you can also colour one yourself as the teacher, or have other teachers who work with your class colour in a piece to symbolize community.

How to use this resource:

• The week before Halloween, give each student a piece of the poster at random. Have them colour in their piece, but do not reveal the design until everyone has finished colouring. Have the class work together to solve the puzzle on Halloween.
• Show the class the completed poster layout first. Have them figure out which piece they have (using logical reasoning) and colour their poster piece according to the example. They can get creative using different lines and patterns in their design.
