In the Ontario Science curriculum, STEM learning takes place in the context of learning related to the Life Systems, Matter and Energy, Structures and Mechanisms, and Earth and Space Systems strands, and it should be assessed and evaluated within these contexts.

A teacher guide is included with a table of contents overview, allowing you to find the experiment/investigation you want to do and to quickly prep the materials you need. Each experiment/investigation is 4 pages long (instructions and worksheets for students). Each experiment can be completed in approximately 40 minutes.

Projects included:

1. Mon assiette santé (Alimentation saine)

• Students cut out images in grocery store flyers to fill in a plate with healthy foods. They will organize their plate by fruits and vegetables, proteins, and whole grains (following Canada’s Food Guide).

2. Affiches sur la sécurité en classe

(Sécurité personnelle et prévention des blessures)

• Students will identify safety issues at school and create a poster to inform other students how to be safe. Their posters will be hung around the school.

3. Ma routine quotidienne (Consommation de substances dépendance et comportements associés)

• Students will create a “spinner” from a provided template. They can use the spinner to tell about their daily routine and healthy habits.

4. Mon livret sur le corps (Développement de la personne et santé sexuelle)

• Students will complete and assemble a booklet that explains the parts of the body, the five senses, and how to care for their body’s hygiene.

5. Cartes de gentillesse (Littératie en santé mentale)

• Students will create kindness cards to promote positive mental health to friends and family.

This resource addresses the NEW 2023 Ontario Language curriculum expectation, Cross-Curricular and Integrated Learning: A3.1 apply the knowledge and skills developed in this grade to support learning in various subject areas and identify some ways this learning can be used in everyday life.

The Social Studies content in this resource is based on the NEW 2023 Ontario Social Studies Curriculum. Both Grade 1 Social Studies units are included: Our Changing Roles and Responsibilities and The Local Community.

Each unit has 10 READING PASSAGES, for a total of 20 readings! These passages can be used for individual reading practice, shared reading, and small-group instruction.
