Students will explore geometric and organic shapes as they paint a colourful pumpkin patch using different shades of orange tempera paint. They will create 10 pumpkins in a variety of shapes and sizes, including round, triangular, square, rectangular, bumpy and lopsided pumpkins.

The finished pumpkin artwork makes a bright and creative fall bulletin board display while helping students explore shape, colour, line, composition and creative expression.

This open-ended elementary art project encourages every student to create a unique interpretation. No two pumpkin patches will look the same!

A note about the workbook format:

This resource is intentionally workbook-based. It is designed to provide an accessible introduction to the elements of design, especially in classrooms with limited time, space or art supplies. The workbook is not intended to replace open-ended art making. Instead, it helps students build foundational vocabulary, practise specific techniques and develop confidence before applying their learning to larger art projects. In the Ontario Science curriculum, STEM learning takes place in the context of learning related to the Life Systems, Matter and Energy, Structures and Mechanisms, and Earth and Space Systems strands, and it should be assessed and evaluated within these contexts.

1. Mon assiette santé (Alimentation saine)

• Students cut out images in grocery store flyers to fill in a plate with healthy foods. They will organize their plate by fruits and vegetables, proteins, and whole grains (following Canada’s Food Guide).

2. Affiches sur la sécurité en classe

(Sécurité personnelle et prévention des blessures)

• Students will identify safety issues at school and create a poster to inform other students how to be safe. Their posters will be hung around the school.

3. Ma routine quotidienne (Consommation de substances dépendance et comportements associés)

• Students will create a “spinner” from a provided template. They can use the spinner to tell about their daily routine and healthy habits.

4. Mon livret sur le corps (Développement de la personne et santé sexuelle)

• Students will complete and assemble a booklet that explains the parts of the body, the five senses, and how to care for their body’s hygiene.

5. Cartes de gentillesse (Littératie en santé mentale)

• Students will create kindness cards to promote positive mental health to friends and family.
