This engaging New Year’s Fireworks Art Project is a fun winter and January art lesson designed for Grades 1–3. It is broken down into clear, step-by-step instructions, so it can be taught by any classroom teacher, even if art is not your specialty!
Students will explore value and contrast as they create a colourful nighttime fireworks scene using chalk pastels on black construction paper. They will experiment with light, medium and dark values by changing the pressure of their chalk pastel and layering white over colours to create bright, glowing effects.
The completed New Year’s artwork makes a bright and colourful January bulletin board display while helping students explore value, contrast, line, colour and composition. Students can also complete an optional New Year’s resolution writing activity and attach it to their finished artwork!
