In this unit, Grade 9 students explore identity, diversity, and empathy through the lens of literature using the “Books as Mirrors and Windows” framework, aligned with key themes in Equity, Inclusion, and Indigenous Perspectives.
Students will engage in meaningful independent reading, choosing one Mirror Book (a text that reflects their own identity or experience) and one Window Book (a text that offers a new perspective or culture). Through scaffolded activities, reflective journaling, and culminating written reflections, students will examine how texts can help us understand both ourselves and others.
This unit promotes student choice, critical thinking, and inclusive learning in a flexible format that supports diverse learners and classroom contexts.
