Throughout the unit, students will explore how geographic inquiry connects to real-world issues, current events, and careers involving geography and geospatial technologies.

This unit has a variety of assessment tools such as daily workbook tasks, group and class discussions, and an optional culminating project (available separately here).

In this culminating inquiry project, students will investigate an important Canadian natural resource and analyze how physical processes and human activity shape its development, use, and impact. Aligned with the Grade 9 Exploring Canadian Geography (CGC1W) curriculum (Strand B: Physical Geography and Physical Processes in Canada and Strand C: Managing Canada’s Resources and Industries), this assignment focuses on resource management and sustainability while connecting classroom learning to real-world Canadian examples.

Students will research where the resource is located in Canada and examine the natural processes that led to its formation or availability. They will explore how the resource is extracted or used, and assess its environmental, social, and economic impacts on communities and the nation. To encourage forward-thinking geographic inquiry, students will also investigate sustainable alternatives or innovations related to the resource and explain why it matters to Canada’s future.

The project culminates in a well-organized written report that integrates geographic knowledge, clear explanations, maps or images with captions, and thoughtful reflection.

In this engaging culminating activity, students will investigate a real-world geographic event and showcase their findings in a professional Google Slides presentation. Aligned with the Grade 9 Exploring Canadian Geography (CGC1W) curriculum (Strand A: Geographic Inquiry and Skill Development), this project empowers students to apply geographic thinking to <ins>current events</ins>, understand the causes and impacts of real-world phenomena, and <ins>explore careers</ins> that contribute to studying and managing these events.

Students will research what happened, where it occurred, and why it matters, analyzing both human and natural geographic factors. They will examine the environmental, social, and economic impacts, explore geographic tools used to study or respond to the event, and highlight a relevant career (such as a GIS analyst, meteorologist, urban planner, or geologist) explaining the role this professional plays in understanding or managing the event. Students will also reflect on what they learned and why the event captured their interest.

Perfect for an end-of-unit assessment, this resource includes detailed project instructions, research criteria, and a clear presentation framework to guide students in creating a polished, informative, and visually engaging slideshow.
