This is the second unit in the Grade 9 Ontario Exploring Canadian Geography (CGC1W) course, for Strand C: Managing Canada’s Resources and Industries.
In this unit, through the lens of Canada’s resource sectors, students will learn how natural resources are extracted, managed, and used in ways that affect the environment, society, and the economy, and how sustainability challenges in forestry, fisheries, mining, and agriculture are shaped by diverse perspectives, including those of governments, industries, advocacy groups, and Indigenous communities. Students will examine how global supply chains move products from extraction to disposal and how strategies such as reclamation, recycling, and clean energy transitions aim to improve sustainability. Throughout the unit, students will strengthen their ability to analyze data, map product life cycles, compare viewpoints, and understand how resource use connects to real-world issues in Canada and around the world.
This unit has a variety of assessment tools such as daily workbook tasks, group and class discussions, and an optional culminating project, recommended to do after the third unit in this course (available separately here: Canadian Natural Resources Project – Includes Google Slides™ (Grade 9 CGC1W)).
