This is the fifth and final unit in the Grade 9 Ontario Exploring Canadian Geography (CGC1W) course, for Strand E: Liveable Communities.
In this unit, students will explore how communities are planned, built, and managed to support environmental sustainability, economic stability, and social well-being. Students will examine how land use, transportation systems, energy choices, and government decisions shape community liveability, and how physical geography and climate change influence planning. Throughout the unit, students will analyze how economic, political, social, and cultural forces affect communities in Canada and beyond, including Indigenous-led planning approaches. Students will develop skills in reading maps and aerial images, evaluating planning strategies, analyzing case studies, and applying geographic thinking to real-world issues such as housing affordability, accessibility, and climate resilience.
This unit has a variety of assessment tools such as daily workbook tasks, group and class discussions, and an optional culminating project, recommended to do after the fifth unit in this course (available separately here: Population Pyramid Template for Google Sheets™ | Canadian Census Data Project).
