This is the fourth unit in the Grade 9 Ontario Exploring Canadian Geography (CGC1W) course, for Strand D: Changing Populations.
In this unit, students will explore how population change in Canada and around the world affects communities, governments, and the global system. Students will learn about factors that influence population growth and decline, such as birth rates, aging populations, migration, urbanization, and global inequalities. They will examine how governments, non-government organizations, and individuals respond to population challenges through policies, programs, and international cooperation. Throughout the unit, students will develop skills in interpreting demographic data, analyzing maps and cartograms, evaluating responses to population issues, and connecting population trends to real-world social, economic, and environmental impacts.
This unit has a variety of assessment tools such as daily workbook tasks, group and class discussions, and an optional culminating project, recommended to do after the fifth unit in this course (available separately here: Population Pyramid Template for Google Sheets™ | Canadian Census Data Project).
